Sai Yok Springs
Sai Yok Springs (operated by Radach & Family Organics Co., Ltd.) is a Thai premium mineral water brand and social enterprise based along the Sai Yok river of Kanchanaburi Province. Established in 2022, it is recognized as Thailand’s first “closed-loop” mineral water brand, utilizing a circular economy model that focuses on reusable packaging and local sourcing to minimize environmental impact.
History
Sai Yok Springs was founded in October 2022. The founders sought to address the lack of high-quality, sustainably packaged mineral water in the Thai market. Inspired by European glass-refilling systems, they established the brand with a focus on “local-for-local” production to reduce the carbon footprint associated with imported bottled water.
In 2024, the company was selected as a business case study by the EU SWITCH-Asia program, which highlights sustainable consumption and production practices in the ASEAN region.
Operations
The company’s production facilities are located in the valley of the Sai Yok river, situated between two national parks in Kanchanaburi.
Source and Quality
The water is sourced from a combination of a natural mountain spring and a 300-meter-deep artesian well. The water undergoes natural filtration through limestone layers, resulting in a mineral profile high in calcium and low in nitrates. The brand offers both still and sparkling varieties.
Sustainability and Technology
Sai Yok Springs operates under a “closed-loop” system, which includes:
- Reusable Packaging: Water is bottled in heavy-duty glass bottles designed to be collected, professionally cleaned, and refilled up to 200 times.
- Renewable Energy: The bottling plant is powered by approximately 80% solar energy, with the remaining 20% sourced from local hydropower.
- Carbon Reduction: By sourcing and distributing locally within Thailand (primarily Bangkok, Phuket, Samui, Krabi and Hua Hin), the company avoids the high logistics emissions typical of imported premium brands.
Distribution
The brand targets the luxury hospitality and fine-dining sectors, supplying Michelin-starred restaurants and high-end hotels. It utilizes a “bottle-deposit and take-back” system to ensure that empty containers are returned to the facility for reuse rather than entering the waste stream.
Community Impact
As a social enterprise, Sai Yok Springs allocates a portion of its revenue to local community development in the Sai Yok valley. Key initiatives include:
- Education: Monthly donations to local schools and funding for English education programs.
- Organic Farming: Hosting workshops for local farmers to promote pesticide-free agriculture, which protects the local water table.
- Infrastructure: Supporting the local temple and village through equipment donations and funding for community events.
